I saw a sun-faced angel

1. I saw a sun-faced angel, the moon of the earth,
Those dark hyacinths are lovers’ sigh since birth.

2. Dressed in black like the shining moon, that graceful cypress,
In the realm of the Franks (christians), she’d be the queen of beauty.

3. Whoever does not bind their heart to the knot of his belt,
Cannot be a true believer and get lost among the lovers.

4. Her glance kills, her lips give life,
That soul-giver’s faith must be the one of Jesus.

5. O Avnî, do not doubt that the beloved will be captivated by you,
You might be the ruler of Istanbul, but she reigns over Galata.

Avnî
